TV’s Effects On Your Family - Lessons From The Easter Egg Hunt

By Katherine Westphal It was the big Easter Egg Hunt. My friend Christy and I lined up with the other kids. We all gazed greedily at the field of goodies before us. “GO!” yelled the announcer. En masse, we rushed forwards. For some reason, everyone veered to the left. I stopped. I glanced at the untouched feast to my right. I ran right, gleefully scooping the candy before the rest caught on. At the end, I had a bagful of candy. Christy, who had followed the herd, had one piece. I was eight at the time, but I never forgot that day or its lessons. What did I do differently from the other kids that day? I simply stopped. I stopped, looked around, and analyzed the situation. And I left the herd. I saw quickly that it was to my advantage NOT to follow the herd that day. Leaving the TV herd In 2003 I left the herd again in a much bigger way. I got rid of my TV. I am one of those rare few that do not have a TV, by choice. And I am reaping the benefits of being TV-free. The reason? In 2001, the kids and I were without TV for several months. Like I did when I was little, I stopped. This time I took notice of the changes in my children and myself during the time we did not have a TV. Then when we got it back, I took notice of the changes again. Based on my observations, I decided we were better off without a TV. Stop and observe YOUR family But it does not matter what TV does to me or my kids. It does not matter that numerous studies show TV’s links to obesity, illiteracy, consumerism, etc. The real question is: How does TV affect you and your family? Find out by stopping and observing. Zombie kids Stop and observe how your body and mind react to TV. Look deeply into your kids zombie-like eyes as they watch TV. Compare that to the look in their eyes as they play outdoors. How do you and your spouse look when watching TV? Take pictures if necessary. Take note of how your children behave after they have spent the afternoon in front of the TV set. How do they behave after playing with their friends? How well do you behave after watching several hours of TV? Your spouse? You may need to get an outside opinion for accuracy. Consumers ‘R Us How do your children behave at the store when confronted with the cool blue gizmo that has been advertised for months on TV commercials? Are they whining and begging and nagging incessantly for that gizmo? How much extra money do you spend chasing the latest fads and fashions, as shown on TV? Feelin’ Groovy Observe how much you really remember of that educational program you just saw. How well do you remember the last book you read in comparison? Test yourself. Stop and consider how you feel after watching several hours of television. Do you feel alert, happy, and energetic? Or do you feel lethargic and depressed and ready to turn the TV back on? Keep a diary to get an accurate assessment. Family Time? Most importantly, monitor the number of hours you and your family spend in front of the TV per week. Is it 20?…30?…40? The average American spends 28 hours per week in front of a TV set. How much do you watch? Now ask yourself: Is this how you really want to spend your time? Is this how you want your kids to spend their time? By age eighteen the average American will have spent three full years in front of the TV? By age seventy the total is 11.67 years. Stop and think if this is what you really want out of life. I did, and I got rid of my TV. Katherine Westphal is the founder of a daring new website, http://TrashYourTV.com, that makes it fun and easy for people to get control of their TV set. Are you addicted to TV? It is Now Time for Your Business to Market to Hispanic Consumers

By Lance Winslow For many years demographics experts have been warning the marketing departments of large American corporations and even small businesses to concentrate on marketing to the Hispanic population. Previously, although this was good advice back then as well, it certainly was not as great advice as it is now. This is because the exponential growth of the Hispanic consumer has been nothing short of a rocket ship over the last decade and now if you are not on the boat marketing to Hispanic consumers and customers you are missing a gigantic chunk of the market. If you failed to jump on the bandwagon as it got going, then you better get on the bandwagon now because this train has left the station. In fact this train is moving so fast it might be a magnetic levitation train, which is really a spacecraft launching device to the stars. It appears in studying the demographics that they are not slowing down but rather speeding up and more and more Hispanic consumers are entering the middle class and even topping out the middle class. Businesses would be well advised to take a good long hard look at this changing demographic and get ready for escape velocity and increase your sales by selling to Hispanic customers. More and more Hispanic people are also running their own business is and if you sell your services or products to other businesses you might also consider that there is a growing market of Hispanic business owners that probably need what you sell. Please consider all this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Two Types Of Men Who Get Involved With Another Man’s Woman

By Teddy Shabba There are only two types of men who will sleep with another man’s women. Men who take advantage of a situationFoolsIn this article will discuss how each man handles this situation. Men who take advantage of a situation: Most of the time, it is a one night stand or at most a casual fling. It is always just about sex and he has no emotional attachment for the women. If she breaks up with her man it in no way changes the dynamics of their sexual relationship unless it is to end it as well. The Fools: Usually starts off as an emotional connection and then turns into a sexual one.Feels as if she is in a bad situation that she just can’t get out of and if she could she would be with him only.If she breaks up with her man he is at the ready to be her new man. When the relationship ends with him he has a hard time understanding that it was just a fling or why she would leave him for someone else. In the end, when it really comes down to it, the man who is simply taking advantage of the situation knows that all it can ever be is a sexual relationship. The fool on the other hand, somehow believes that it really is about him doing something more for her or having a special connection and that the two of them at some point can be in a “relationship” and live happily ever after. DISABILITY and WORKING: Making the Systems Work For You

By Carolyn Magura In a previous article, we discussed the JAN the Job Accommodation Network, and just how valuable a resource that link is to those of us who are disabled, yet still working. Alsoin that article, we left me as the VP-HR for an entire Ship Repair Yard. As you can probably imagine, my job description was very extensive. For example, consider the following. * I was responsible for, and/or did all the work for Employee Relations; Labor Relations; compensation; benefits; Workers Compensation (averaging 300-400 incidents per year). We had a Training Center, on site that was my responsibility. I also personally handled all of the Employment litigation. This meant representing the Shipyard in court and other legal/labor proceedings. * Each day was crammed full of meetings, crises, activities, etc. * The job required extensive patience, experience, maturity, tact, expertise, and the ability to remain calm in the middle of multiple crises. So, I received the conclusive diagnosis, and, probably like you, I thought I could still do my job. The day I knew that I had to cut back will remain always in my mind: I had a Craft Manager (Painters) and his Union Business Agent and Shop Steward in my office, very agitated; I had the Safety Director and an employee out in the hallway; I had the Executive VP for Production on my cell phone; and I had the Owner on my land line (phone). All were talking (yelling) at me at once. Now, this was typical, but for the first time I froze; I could not multi-task effectively to provide the customer service to all of these clients in the manner that they deserved. My vision left (big black holes in my right eye; heat waves in my left Optic Neuritis); my MS had reached the stage that I was too tired and too befuddled to effectively manage the work. So, what was I to do? Now remember, even w-a-y back then I was an Expert Patient; a Chronic Disease Self-Manager; and practiced Patient-Oriented health care with my Doctors. It is probably not a surprise to you that I also was a very collaborative Executive with my fellow Ship Repair Yard Executives, including the Owner. I knew that he would work with me to come up with a plan to allow me to continue working to the full extent of my capabilities, but I NEEDED TO ACCEPT AND TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY for describing WHAT that looked like, HOW that would happen, WHO needed to do what, WHEN all steps needed to happen, and HOW to ensure that the process followed all relevant federal, state, local laws, company policy, vendor regulations, etc. Sounds like a big job, doesnt it? Well, looking back, it was. But, in the moment, at the time, I did what I recommend that you do as you begin the process. DO NOT think of the entire process; focus on the end result, always keep it in mind, but set up a plan, stick to the plan, and take things one step at a time. (Just the way one eats an elephant one bite at a time!) AND, you get a big advantage over what I was facing! Ive been there before you; I faced the problem, worked out the following process, and have been blessed with the ability to share it with you. Hopefully, you too will be successful with your own journey. The Journey From Working Full Time to Working With a Disability.[1] (Note: this blog is only describing the steps in the process. For greater detail and copies of the documents in the process, they, and the actual examples I used, can be found at the www.disabilitykey.com website, in the Disabilitykey Workbook.) Step #1: Know where you are going, and begin your journey in enough time to keep control over the process of getting there! * Recognize that the end goal is to create a process that will be a win-win for both you and your company. The goal for the company is to retain you, a valuable employee, and your knowledges, skills and abilities. Define this goal for yourself; do you want to go on LTD (long term disability); do you want to retain your income at a level amount; what do you want? * Start this process early enough so that you retain control over your future, as I did. Do NOT wait until your supervisor comes to you and says that you have a problem you arent getting your work done, etc. At that time, you have already lost control, because your supervisor would have talked to your Human Resources Department, and they would have attempted to set up a plan for you. Now, not to sound too paranoid, but in my experience, most HR folks are woefully deficient in knowing what to do in these circumstances (yes, I know, another challenge for me to accept, and I do have plans to address this situation); and, any plan that they would/could come up with probably would not benefit you as well as the company. * DO NOT TALK to your supervisor or to Human Resources until after you have developed your plan. Step #2: Gather up all relevant documents. * Collect all copies of your benefit Summary Plan Descriptions (SPD). * Get a copy of your Companys Employee Handbook. * Get your Job Description. Also, go to your Human Resources department, and see if you can get copies of other job descriptions for jobs other than your own that you believe that you might be able to do, in spite of your conditions symptom impairments. * Access the JAN website and print out the information about your specific condition. Look particularly at the examples other companies have made as reasonable accommodations for employees with symptom impairments similar to yours. It is important to do some research here. Look at conditions similar to yours, and the symptom impairments for those conditions. Continue to research until you find just what matches YOUR specific situation. Step #3: Specifically, set your goal. * It is easier in the following steps to have an actual example to work with, so I will use my own. (NOTE: as you begin your process and have questions, remember that you can ask them as a comment to this blog and get not only my response, but those of thousands of your new best friends in your exact circumstances! And, as you ask questions and receive answers, you will also be helping others like yourself. So, yall unshy people, ask and answer away!) * MY SITUATION: 1) I decided that I still had something to offer to my company, in a lesser position; 2) I wanted to go on LTD yet still work; 3) I wanted to maintain my pay, if I could figure out how to do it; 4) I wanted to keep my health insurance and other benefits (like vacation and sick leave) benefits. THIS BECAME MY GOAL. * MY RESULTS: As a result of using this process, I was successful in working through my LTD elimination period of 6 months (180 days) and 1 year on LTD for my own occupation for a year, at a lesser job, at full pay, while maintaining my health insurance and other company benefits. Step #4: List the questions you need to answer in support of your goal, and answer them by researching your previously gathered documentation. * I started with goal #2 first, because I needed to know what triggered my LTD. It may not surprise you, but it REALLY surprised me that what triggered LTD eligibility wasnt having a disabling disease/condition or accident, but a pay cut specifically caused by symptom impairment of that disease/condition or accident on my ability to perform the essential duties of my job! Once I knew this, it made sense, as LTD is an insurance policy; its purpose is to augment pay lost due a pay-impacting disability! DUH! Now all I had to do is figure out just how much of a pay cut triggered the eligibility. * In my case, it was a 20% pay cut. BUT, I also discovered that my LTD had a 180 day Elimination period that I would need to fulfill before being eligible to receive any money from my LTD insurance. Also, since my LTD insurance paid 60% of my base pay, if I wanted my pay to continue at 100%, I needed to figure out how to get the 40% back while on LTD. * As for goal #4, I read in my Employee Handbook that I had to keep working at least 32 hours per week to retain eligibility for my companys health insurance plan. * For goal #3, if I was only going to work for 32 hours, and going to 32 hours per week equated to a 20% pay cut! BUT, as I wanted to retain my pay, I had to figure out how to get income for the other 8 hours per week. * So, if you are paying attention, I needed to work my own job for 180 days (six months) for 32 hours; I needed documentation that what caused me to take this action was my conditions symptom impairments; I needed to figure out how to earn back income for the additional 8 hours per week; and, I needed to figure out what job(s) I could go to after my LTD elimination period for 60% of my base pay paid by LTD insurance, and what I could do in partnership with my company that would pay me the additional 40% of my base pay to get it back up to 100%. * First of all, it WAS NOT EASY AT ALL to literally wring information out of my LTD insurance Carrier! When I started asking them questions, their first reaction was why would I want to continue to work? No one ever had before, why should I? It took me about a month to go through enough folks to get the answers to my questions, but it should not be a shock to yall that I prevailed. Heres what I learned. 1. My specific LTD plan said that I could earn income during the elimination period, and for the first year of coverage, as long as the amount earned, added to the LTD amount, did NOT EXCEED the amount of my full pay prior to triggering LTD. 2. The 20% pay cut action that triggered my LTD was for actual work pay; it did not cover sick and vacation pay. So, I worked it out with my company[2] that I was going to keep my current job and pay during the 180 day LTD elimination period. Each week I would get a check cut from payroll for 32 hours worked. I then would get a check for 8 hours of sick and/or vacation pay. The 2 together kept my pay whole; the process complied with my LTD requirements, and met my stated goals. (As an aside, this is another reason why it is a good idea to keep a bank of useable sick and vacation pay. Also, my timing was such that my 180 days covered 2 different calendar years, and our company had the policy of granting all vacation time at the beginning of each calendar year. This was how I was able to use the 28 days of combination sick and vacation time to augment my work pay and keep my total pay complete.) 3. At the end of the 180 day elimination period, I accepted another job that my company, my doctors, the LTD insurance company and I agreed that I could perform.[3] Again, keeping my end goals in mind, and knowing that my LTD insurance would pay me 60% of my base pay, and I wanted to continue to earn benefits, I negotiated a position that would allow me to work for 32 hours a week, in a contributing capacity, that paid 40% of my base pay. As you can probably see, this arrangement was GREAT for both me and for my company. Well, folks, this had again been a long blog, but I hope that it will be helpful for you. GOOD LUCK!!! [1] Note: This process does NOT cover working while on SSDI, nor does it cover going back to work FROM SSDI coverage. If there is interest in those processes, let me know and Ill create them for you. [2] Actually, I did an entire proposal for my Company after I did all of the research, and had all of the answers. It included my goals, what I had learned, the steps I needed to take, what Jobs I thought I could do, the entire kit and caboodle as my kids would say. Again, it is this Expert Patient, being in control, doing the work ahead of time that got and keeps getting me results! [3] Again, the process of working with your Doctors and completing what is called a Residual Functional Capacity analysis and all that this entails to first qualify for LTD, and, next, to qualify for a job you, your company, your doctors and the LTD company are OK with is covered in great detail in the Disabilitykey Workbook. The Break Up Was Your Fault And Now You Want Your Ex Back

By Christine Akiteng Sometimes you have a great relationship and for some unknown reason you do something really stupid and the person ends up breaking up with you. You cant help kicking yourself, and turning it over and over in your heard, If only I had said this or If only I had done that instead Why did it have to happen? May be at the time you thought that he/she over reacted but after really thinking about it, you can see he/she had a point and must have felt really terrible. Besides you really miss him/her. How do you make those first steps to getting your ex back? If you did something really criminal like cheated on them and or broke up the relationship to explore a relationship with a mutual friend, they may want nothing to do with you. But if what you did is forgivable, they might want to try to give it another shot - some relationships are just meant to be and you will not know if you do not try to find out. But before you go rushing to get your love back you need to do a few things: 1. Really analyze what went wrong. Just making amends by telling him/her you’re truly sorry isnt going to do it. You must do whatever you need to do to make sure that you do not repeat your mistakes - and that they can be confident you’ve changed. 2. Be willing to do whatever it takes, this may include eating a really humble pie. It’s always easy to blame your “problems” on someone else. To believe that if he/she wasn’t acting in a certain way, your relationship would be great. Wrong. You attracted this person because the two of you are vibrating at the same frequency and in the same direction and your direction may be that of pain and self-destruction. Admit your issues, and like I said resolve them, otherwise you’ll get in the cycle of on-again and off-again madness. 3. Try to find out before hand how he/she feels. Observe his/her expressions and body language when around you. If you havent had a chance to meet since the break up and you have mutual friends or you are close to his/her family, ask them if he/she has confided in them whether he/she is open to getting back together. They may even have some ideas for you regarding how you can make the transition easier. However, this is a very risky move especially if the reason you broke up in the first place has to do with trust, or not being open enough. They may see it as you usual sneaky self. Some people try to get back on phone, but a face-to-face meeting is the best approach. You will come across as more sincere if he/she can see your body language. Do not try and make it look like you accidentally bumped into him/her and now want to discuss getting back together. He/she wont take you seriously. Instead ask to see him/her and explain why. If he/she says No-way , at least you have a fair idea that he/she may still be angry at you. Don’t be discouraged though. He/she has the right to hurt. We all do. Try contacting him/her again a few weeks after. If he/she still refuses to meet you, chances are they have moved on. Sorry. No need to make a pest of yourself or start acting like a stalker. But if he/she agrees to meet you: 1. Apologize. Go all out to convey how truly sorry you are. Avoid going into a rant and rave about what he/she did to make you do what you did. Its self defeating. Let him/her know how dreadful you feel about the whole issue. 2. Hear him/her out. Let him/her talk about the hurt, the anger, and all the emotions. Dont try to belittle any of them. People have the right to their emotions even if you do not agree. After theyve gotten it out they will most likely feel understood and will be willing later on to hear your side of the story. 3. Promise to start the relationship with a clean slate. Try and set out constructive ideas how you will avoid, at all costs, things ever reaching that state again. Resolve that it will never happen again and work towards it. 4. Woo him/her again. Let him/her know in subtle ways that you will never repeat the mistake. Make the relationship come alive by rekindling the fires. Make him/her feel special. Give him/her many reasons to be deliriously happy. Not many people are that fortunate. Make it work! If you are struggling (or going crazy) with getting over a relationship that drifted apart for no apparent reason or if you are considering giving your ex a second chance (and not sure if its worth a second try), I have a whole section on my website dedicated to men/women trying to love again but feeling stuck on an ex; and anyone convinced his/her current lover is stuck on an ex (some tell-tale signs that he/she is really over an ex). Is Most Marketing by Small Businesses KILLING THEM?

By Adrian W. Savage I just collected my mail. As usual, more than 80% of it was junk. Marketing junk. What did I do with it? Threw it in the garbage without reading it. Same as you do. Only it made me think about this article, which I guess might be of some use, unintended by the morons who send me all that useless direct mail. When I open a local newspaper, the first thing I do is chuck away all the god-awful leaflets and flyers hidden inside it. Same with anything people put in my mailbox or tuck behind the latch on my door. Out with the BS! Now, I’m ready to accept that someone, somewhere must read that kind of unwanted garbage. Maybe even thinks it’s useful. Hell, it’s a free country. If no one read it, surely (please God) people would stop sending it. Wouldn’t they? Why this matters Most of the stuff is sent by huge corporations. They get a response rate of probably less than a fraction of a percent — say 1 person in every 300-400 — but that’s okay. They send out so many millions of mailing pieces it adds up to a measurable number of possible customers. Besides, they treat it as just another cost of doing business. They can afford it out of their vast profits. But you, the small business owner, can’t afford that kind of cost:return ratio. Nor can you send out millions of unwanted marketing messages (Thank God!) Sending out 5000 would be a very big deal (printing costs, distribution costs…). 10,000 would probably be too expensive on any grounds. So a response of maybe under 10 people — not SALES, just a response of any kind — isn’t going to make you feel good. Playing the Numbers Marketing is a big numbers game, and getting ever more so. Look how many people signed up for the “Do Not Call List” to get rid of those loathsome telemarketers who always call at a meal time. As soon as consumers have choice, their first action is to dump any kind of marketing. Technology is giving them more and more of that choice. They can block pop-ups on the Internet. Kill spam (to some extent, but there will be better ways soon), use their TiVo to remove TV adverts. You have to persuade people to let you give them marketing messages (that’s “permission marketing”). Mostly, they won’t, unless you offer them something they really want in return. Here’s the good news What people want is simple: useful, FREE information, with no catch. Offer them that and they’ll “pay” for it by letting to add just a smidgeon of marketing. Give them what they find useful; as much of it as you can. Don’t cheat either by doling out a bit, then trying to make them pay for the rest. That’s like your lover giving you a kiss, then asking for fifty bucks for any more (and you know what business that is, right?). Marketing used to be trapping people into reading what suits you, the seller. No more. Unless you have megabucks available to smother the market in the hope of finding a few saps still willing to go along with that game, marketing today is persuading people that you’re worth listening to when THEY want to and on THEIR terms. And that means giving them plenty in return. Now the best news You don’t need megabucks to do this. All you need is willingness, a real concern to be useful to your customers and a web site. Share your passions. Invite your customers to talk with you and with each other. Keep handing out truly useful information. They’ll flock to your site and reward you with enough trust to consider your marketing message. Because they’re not fools. They know you’re in business to sell things. And they like to buy, especially from people they like. They just hate being sold to. Adrian W. Savage writes for people who want help with the daily dilemmas they face at work. Reduce The Uncertainty With Emergency Loans

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=James_Taylor]James Taylor Uncertainties are a part of every life. It is just impossible to get rid of those small intricacies of life. Sometimes the surprises that the life throws up at us are pleasant and sometimes they are ones which we would not wish even on our enemy. It is only natural then that there are a few people are more adept at handling those happenings than the others. Those others may require some help, depending upon the circumstances the help could be emotional, psychological or even financial. All the other kinds of help can be gotten through relatives or other people but to meet with the financial emergencies the best option would be to take the emergency loans. Emergency loans as the name suggests are loans offered to people who need money to sort out problems quickly to stop them from increasing in size of burden. Emergency can relate to any thing it can be a family emergency, a business emergency or a personal emergency it is required that it is treated with utmost care and in a way that we should limit the chances of it happening again that is also where we can use the emergency loans. It is advisable by many experts that taking emergency loans is more advantageous than taking any other step towards solving the problem. Emergency loans with its features help in solving the problem in a way that would not be that hard on the borrower of the loan. Features of the emergency loans are: Depending upon the circumstances the borrowers can choose either a secured or an unsecured loan Since it is an emergency loan the loan is sanctioned quickly if it is so desired. Every range of the loan amount is offered as a loan, all you need to do is find a good lender. Subject to conditions a borrower can get interest rates reduced to the bare minimum required to be paid. Very little check is made of the official papers as well as the information of the borrower is also kept secret. People with bad credit history are also made available of these emergency loans to meet with their emergencies. All types of emergencies are taken care of. With these features included and available to the borrowing public it is easy to understand as to why these loans are highly recommended to the borrowers. The borrowers can also apply for these loans by going on line and applying to a lender which deals in emergency loans and if your profile matches the loan will be offered very quickly. Housekeepers job is repeatedly a never-ending one. Housekeepers should always make sure that hotels are to be kept clean and there should be a warm welcoming for the guests. Their duties are to inspect and maintain the high range of cleanliness, training the staff members, administering budgets, health and safety issues. The staff members have to clean the guests bathrooms and bedrooms regularly.Their working hours starts early in the morning or working in the evening and nights. Probably, week ends are given holidays for them including government holidays. Housekeepers in Newyork earn from 11,000 to 35,000 a year. Housekeeper should be well qualified as an excellent organizer, learn sharply during training period, motivating the staff members and he should be interested in customer service. Some of the housekeepers in Newyork have no formal qualifications. An NVQ/SVQ in Catering and Hospitality are most welcomed. Some employers prefer to employ adults with experience of customer service.On-the-job training is given to them and it includes handling, cleaning chemicals safely, and safe manual lifting. Opportunities are given to the employees in senior housekeeping positions like head housekeeper or executive housekeeper. They can also move to their related job in their hotel, such as front-of-house manager or training manager. The essentials of a good housekeeper include Hygienic, regularity, order, and techniques. Without proper hygienic house holding is an utter waste. Regularity is very much needed in housekeeping. Order must be crucial that a place should be given for everything, and everything in its place. At last, method is most necessary for the work.
